Cleveland : Bonfoey Gallery Invitation Private event : April 29, 2017

Opening next Saturday at Bonfoey Gallery CLE http://www.bonfoey.com/

I will be exhibiting these four artworks.

I have been inspired by the underwater world for a long time; having been a diver for over 35 years- I have seen the transition of coral reefs and it is unsettling to see the changes caused by not only natural means like hurricanes which in the aftermath, leave a lonely seahorse stranded and clouded waters. Worse is the bleaching from warmed waters caused by global warming.

Inquires to Gallery

This piece “Memori” has been an evolution in time and memory.  There are two paintings making up a “whole” on display but they are available individually as well.   Seven years ago I created a painting called “Forest Passage 2” (below) which had been exhibited in my solo show at the Butler Museum of American Art.  After my mothers passing, three years ago, I was compelled to paint over this painting…pouring white clay over entire surface and then wiping and scraping away layers, revealing parts of the original painting beneath visible through the waterfall and the world. There is a great deal of relief in this piece as a result and hidden imagery.

The “Avance” series

I exhibited a portion of this series for the first time in Chicago at Firecat Projects/Aug/Sept 2015.  It is an ongoing project of 4″x8″ panels that explore the vulnerable nature of the human spirit and its immense resilience in the face of adversity. We continually pose questions like, “Now what? What will be? What will I do?  When will it happen?” These questions articulate a moment in time when a transition is taking place, when the world inside us changes. I feel that the most important parts of being human are those moments when we have the courage to rise up and face our demons; it is at these transitions that life’s challenging circumstances are reshaped indefinitely. Rather than focusing on the before or after, I want to depict the state when something happens as we are moving through our lives. That is the point in time when we experience courage, love and transcendence.

VIEW 360

Art 360 is an exciting new exhibition curated by Charles Bluestone, that I will be participating in this Spring and will debut at the Southern Ohio Museum & Cultural Center (Portsmouth) end of January 2016 until the end of March 2016, and travel to Columbus Museum of Art where it will be on exhibit from April 15, 2016 to August 15, 2016, and then heads to the Massillon Museum where it will be on exhibit from September 15, 2016 to the end of the year.  Other exhibits are planned for 2017.

I will be in great company with some of my favorite local artist friends, Amy Casey, Audra Skuodas and John Pierson as well as some amazing artists from all over Ohio; 48 very creative eggs by 48 artists.  Here is a link to some of the works so far.

“Avance” @ Firecat Projects : Artist talk : Friday, Sept 18 @ 7pm

It is great to be back again for my third solo exhibition near my hometown of Chicago where I grew up north of the city on my Grandfather’s tree nursery. I created this body of work over the past three years and the largest painting, “Sacrifice I” I worked on and off since 2009.   In this body of work, “Avance”  (french translation-to move forward) I created over 30 pieces which explore the vulnerable nature of the human spirit and its immense resilience in the face of adversity where we are transitioning through the unexpected moments when we process what just happened…and ask, “Now what? What will be? What will I do? When will it happen?”

Firecat Projects is a wonderful organization run by Stan Klien and artist Tony Fitzpatrick.  Stan and his intern India Murphy did a fantastic job installing all of the works with me.  The show features over thirty paintings, several journals, two stone lithographs and an installation on slate.   Thanks to everyone who came out and supported me at the opening, I truly appreciate it!  The show runs simultaneously during Art Expo Chicago and up through Sept.19th ; available for appointment through Sept 20th

Here is an intro to my talk : Avance Series  and Details of the Event (where and when)
