Charity Sunshine Tilleman Dick was the inspiration for this piece – created while she lived and inspired us while enduring her cancer treatment at the Cleveland Clinic.  She was one of the most exquisite people I have ever known. <\/p>\n

During a year and a half sabbatical, I traveled in France, Croatia, and sailed up Vancouver Island into Desolation Sound. The extraordinary diversity in the scope, texture, and movement of water in these flowing landscapes informed this body of work. l The resulting images explore feelings of intimacy, serene and humble submission, and occasional clarity I experienced during this reflective time. I worked rather intuitively, trusting my instincts as some evolved into ambitious and even experimental works.<\/p>\n

My medium of kaolin clay \/ scraffito allows me to build up the surface in multiple layers of organic clay and pure pigments that I make by hand, creating a surface I can carve and wipe away using razors, sanding and etching type tools before adding inks which contain lacquer, occasional oil paint and a final protective UV varnish.  This sculptural dimensional application, with layer upon layer of organic clay in relief and absence, often create light and unexpected textures and narratives of the imagination. <\/p>\n

2015 “Avance” CHICAGO Firecat Projects <\/p>\n

Fircat Projects invited me to exhibit my latest body of work “Avance”, an exhibition of thirty works, including kaolin clay, inks on panel as well as several works on paper and stone lithographs.  Here is a studio shot of works in progress with my largest piece to date on the right “Sacrifice I” 48″ x 90″ and the full view below.  I wish I could show you how much dimension there is in these works as well as the smoothness of the clay in areas.  I feel like I came full circle with my medium of clay, handmade pigments in clay and lacquer based inks with this body of work.<\/p>\n
